The Brand and Size of Notebooks

The issue of branding

People ask the same question every day: “Which brand is the best on the market?”

Each may have their preferences, but the answer experts usually give is: "This is not a question mark but a series of questions."

Just like in cars, each brand has its good series and its bad series and each car has its defects. Obviously, just like in cars, there are certain brands that should be avoided (fortunately, LADA does not make laptops) while the major brands cause the least hassle. In addition to this, major brands have a better monitoring service (service and spare parts), which ensures a longer life to your laptop.

The question that follows inevitably is: “So, what is the best series?”. The most reliable series are the professional ones of major manufacturers.

The life, quality of materials and reliability of these series are much higher. However, the price/design/performance ratio may not blow your mind. At first glance, they are more expensive, less sexy and less efficient than the rest of laptops. This is often true when it comes to the price and design, but the problems arise when it comes to performance.

Strangely, many of these theoretically less powerful notebooks are faster than the others in practice (a small Porsche will always be faster than a big Lada...). The professional series are especially useful if you intend to use your laptop for more than 3 or 4 hours per day or in hostile environments (you have four children at home). They are tested and planned for that. Some even resist to shocks and liquids in reasonable quantities ("Drop that hammer, Kevin!"). In summary, there is no mystery about the fact that the professional series of major brands are generally stronger.

The issue of sizing

The size is the determining factor for many of the qualities of a notebook, so it would be best if you were not wrong about it. Currently, the size (and weight) of a notebook varies from that of a shrew to that of a young calf.

What would you choose between a bar of soap connected to the internet and a foldable 20-inch screen? As always, the question to ask is "What do I want to do with my computer?".

Everyone can have their opinion on this subject. However, most people believe that the best sizes of a notebook range between 12 inches and 15 inches.

Notebooks are portable while having all the features of a desktop PC. Laptops smaller than 12 inches will lose their ergonomics while those larger than 15 inches are rather designed as office computers that can be bent and stored in the dresser drawer.

What are your real needs and what are your priorities? Do you prefer power and usability? Then you should choose a big laptop. Do you prefer mobility and time use (a few e-mails, a little Googling and a DVD session from time to time)? Then you should choose a small laptop. Do you want all these at once? Well, there are a variety of intermediate solutions for you.
